His career began in late 1977 with DC Comics on titles like Mister Miracle and anthology horror books before he moved to Marvel.

Golden is renowned for his influential runs on Marvel's The Micronauts and later, the gritty Vietnam War series The 'Nam. A consummate creator, he co-created the incredibly popular character Rogue in Avengers Annual #10 (1981) with writer Chris Claremont, solidifying his legacy in the Marvel Universe. He also co-created the anthropomorphic space opera character Bucky O'Hare.
